For Hearts that Hurt

When the Poem Won't End

When words are too many and tempers flare...
Or they're too few and you're left to wonder
Is something wrong?
Did I do or say something to change us?
Or has it already happened and I'm the last to know?

When moods are inconsistent and unpredictable;
And you're afraid to speak.
They're volatile, they're giddy, they're sullen
There's no rhyme or reason, and you can't figure out
If somehow you are responsible.

When the person you've loved and built a life with
Isn't the same anymore,
They don't talk to you the same way;
They don't look at you with that knowing smile;
Sometimes they don't see you at all.

When life feels guarded and measured,
Bought, paid for, used up, and forgotten.
When all the questions are the same,
But the answers you always knew aren't right anymore
And you're confused and worn and tender.

When you don't understand and your mind
can't create an answer your heart will believe;
When you try to wrap your thoughts in gentle words
So they come out just right,
But no one is listening.

When you have to consider the possibility
You never thought could happen,
When your emotions run cold and the tears stop.
When you feel frozen to the core and you realize
You're living alone in a world you built for two.

When it's all around you and you can't escape,
When the poem goes on and on because the end is unknown,
Unseen, unheard, unwritten.
That's when you hang on and pray, And you try to wake up
Because this isn't your life.

Joshua 1:5  "As I was with Moses, so I will be with you;
I will never leave you nor forsake you."
